More Couples Worth Knowing
The six couples above are only part of the story. Spain in particular has produced many bachata couples who compete, teach and perform across Europe. Here are three more names you will see on festival lineups.
- Gabryel & Bego (Seville, Spain). A Seville couple billed as Spanish bachata champions, they have promoted bachata parties since 2005 and created TODOBACHATA, which they describe as Spain's biggest bachata event, with more than 1,500 attendees.
- Ronald & Alba (Alicante, Spain). Ronald Castro was born in Buenaventura and raised in Cali, Colombia, and Alba Sánchez comes from Elche, Spain. They became a competition couple in 2012, won the Spain and Europe BachataStars titles that year, and were crowned World Bachata Masters champions in Madrid in February 2015.
- Pablo & Raquel (Cádiz, Spain). Pablo Pérez started dancing bachata in 2010 with Korke Escalona and Judith Cordero. He teamed up with Raquel Castro in 2014, and the pair won Bachata Stars Spain in 2016 and placed fourth at that year's World Bachata Masters.
How Bachata Dancers Become Famous
Most of today's best-known couples rose through some mix of viral videos, competitions and the festival circuit.
Viral videos. Ataca and La Alemana first hoped to perform as a salsa couple, but the salsa scene felt crowded, so they built a bachata routine instead. When that performance ended up on YouTube, it exploded and carried both of them, and bachata dancing itself, to a worldwide audience.
Competitions. Titles are another route to recognition. Korke founded the BachataStars competition, which has launched the careers of several well-known dancers. The World Bachata Masters, which its organizers call the most important contest in the world, drew thirteen couples to its 2014 edition at the Bachatea World Congress in Madrid, an event that brought together thousands of dancers from more than 30 countries.
Festivals. Congresses are multi-day events that mix workshops, social dancing, performances and competitions, and some focus entirely on bachata. BachaTu in Boca Chica, in the Dominican Republic, drew thousands of fans from around the world in 2015 and added live concerts every night. The Bachata Sensual World Congress in Punta Umbría, Spain, is set for its fifth edition in January 2027, with Korke & Judith, Marco & Sara and Luis & Andrea on the lineup.
